No Room for a Vegetable Garden? Think Containers

Ah, late spring when gardeners all over the country are planning and/or planting their vegetable gardens in anticipation of the perfect tomato.

But what if you don’t have a large yard? If there isn’t enough room for even a four foot square plot or raised bed is that perfect tomato out of reach? Not at all. In fact, growing tomatoes in containers is one of the easiest yard-to-table things you can grow. Tomatoes enjoy large pots and will still need a cage for support but with good soil and sunlight that juicy, perfect beefsteak beauty can be yours.

Not that much of a tomato fan? Fear not! Peas are another great choice for early spring or even fall when the temperatures aren’t too intense. Other options include potatoes, squash, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, and even radishes. Grow you own salad right there on your sunny patio. Don’t have a sunny patio? Check out our floor plans online or schedule a visit to discover the sunny patios of our model homes here at Hilton Head Lakes.

April Gardening in South Carolina

While homeowners in much of the country wait for that last threat of frost to pass by before planting their window boxes, often well into May, here at Hilton Head Lakes we’re already digging in the dirt and enjoying early blooms.

What are we planting while April snows still threaten the north? We’re planting our summer bulbs: delicious dahlias, glorious gladioli, colorful cannas and luscious lilies. We’re spraying our fruit trees to prepare for the bountiful harvests to come while up north blossoms are only just beginning to open. Planters are blooming on porches and patios. Spring is a magical time in the lowcountry. But what about vegetable gardening? Surely it’s too early for that, right? Not at all. April is the perfect time to set out cantaloupe, cucumbers, melons, squash, peas and beans, and even sweet corn. While northern climates are just beginning to consider cool weather crops, we’ve already moved on to summer crops.

So if you are contemplating moving for retirement or acquiring a vacation home but haven’t decided on a location? Consider Hilton Head Lakes. There’s so much to explore and enjoy here. What to Know Before Moving to South Carolina

Ah, the Palmetto State. The beaches, the hill country, the climate… a popular vacation destination. But what about living here? Oh course at Hilton Head Lakes, we are quite partial to the area so allow us to share some insights.

South Carolina is popular indeed, increasingly so studies indicate that the population increased 5.9% between 2010 and 2015 alone. And why not? The weather here is friendlier than most parts of the country. Mild winters, breezes off the water in the summer easing the warmth of the day. What could be better than sitting on your porch or patio, a cool drink in hand on a warm evening in April?

Living at Hilton Head Lakes offers many amenities in our community. The owners’ community center boasts a fitness center, pickle ball courts, a pool with lap lanes and a beach entry, there is a grilling area, and even a gathering space with a screened porch to enjoy the evening. And then there is the golf course clubhouse that is open to the public featuring the South Wedge Restaurant.

The local area is rich in attractions, just in case you want to explore. Within 30 minutes or less you can visit the world class resort of Hilton Head Island, take a walking tour through Old Town Bluffton, see historic Beaufort, shop farmers’ markets in Hardeeville, or enjoy Savannah’s rich history and famous River Street.

What do you need to know besides the climate, southern hospitality, the food, the beauty of nature, and attractions? The cost of living will most likely be as good as or better than what you’re accustomed to with housing comparable to the national average, the economy is experiencing robust growth, and state tax rates are comparable to the national average as well. Life is certainly good in the lowcountry.

Boom in DIY Projects

One thing being cooped up this past year has resulted in is a boom in DIY projects. Renovations, organization projects, baking, cooking, you name it as a nation we’ve been doing all sorts of things around the house to keep boredom at bay.

Maybe you haven’t jumped in to the DIY movement just yet but are now looking around your home and thinking it needs a bit of sprucing up for spring. But where to start? There are some trends for 2021 you might want to consider.

Looking to change up the color scheme? Consider Pantone’s color of the Year: Ultimate Gray and its accent compliment Illuminating Yellow. Gray has become the new beige, a versatile neutral that is warm and comforting. While Illuminating Yellow might be too bold for some folks, in small touches it really can be a lovely added touch. Another color on the rise is blush. This warm not too pink tone is a millennial favorite and is another great warming neutral.

Indoor plants have long been a great home accessory and they have really taken off lately in adding that something special to the home. After all, they are not only pretty they clean the air, and bring the clarity and calming aspect of nature indoors which is a bonus when you can’t get out as much as you used to.

A somewhat amusing trend that designers are showcasing is the bidet. The great toilet paper scarcity of 2020 really made an impact. One way designers are offering to ease the mind over whether or not that paper product will be available is the addition of the bidet to our bathrooms.

For these and other decorating trends for 2021 check out Good Housekeeping magazine https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/decorating-ideas/g34762178/home-decor-trends-2021/

After you do, come on down to the Lowcountry, visit us here at Hilton Head Lakes – you just might want to apply those ideas to your dream home here in our community.

St Patrick’s Day Menu Choices

Food is a big part of every holiday and St Patrick’s Day is no exception. But what if Irish soda bread and boiled cabbage aren’t exactly your cup of tea? What other choices do you have?

While corned beef isn’t for everyone, a nice Irish stew made with lamb can hit the spot. The beauty of this Irish stew recipe is that little else is needed to make it a meal because it contains vegetables. Serve with crusty bread to soak up all of the delicious sauce. Heck out the recipe on Spruce Eats’ website along with a number of other St Patrick’s Day menu suggestions: https://www.thespruceeats.com/traditional-irish-stew-recipe-435757

Not looking to put together a whole Irish themed menu or even main dish but wanting to add a little something to your table? How about dessert? There’s soda bread of course but how about apple cake, Bailey’s cheesecake, bread pudding with butterscotch sauce? Find these and more here: https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food-recipes/dessert/g3257/classic-irish-desserts/ no green food coloring needed.

While we might not have huge parades this year, dye rivers greens, or toast each other in our favorite pub with green beer, we can still indulge in great food and warm wishes. So for all of us at Hilton Head Lakes:

Here’s to you, your friends and family, may the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you! May the Irish hills caress you. May her lakes and rivers blessyou. May the luck of the Irish enfold you.

Moving? Some Things to Consider

It’s a whole new year! Will this year mean a new home for you and your family? If you’re planning, or even just toying with the idea of relocating here are a few things to consider.

Moving is a stressful process, whether you’ve been in your current location a short time or have twenty years or more invested in your home. Maybe you’re a minimalist, or maybe you believe in saving absolutely everything because you never know when you might need it. Either way, you’ve got to pack it all up. Yikes. Fortunately, there are experts out there with tips that can help.

The first tip is not to put off to tomorrow what you can accomplish today – call the utilities, hire a mover or set up the rental truck if you’re the do-it-yourself type, gather boxes, and eat up the perishables in your kitchen so that you don’t have to throw out any more than necessary.

Use the tried and true method of sorting your things: keep, donate and toss. Hold that garage sale, donated to local charities, if you need to rent a dumpster and pitch what you need to. After all, do you really need that broken whatsit? Are you really going to fix it ‘one of these days’?

Then there’s the packing. Yikes. There are a few hacks there too. First, don’t empty out the dresser drawers, keep everything in them but wrap them so things don’t fall out. Keep your clothes on their hangers, it will make it easier to unpack them later, use a wardrobe box if possible. Take a photo of the back of your TV so you can easily reconnect the cables to your various devices.

Get to know your new community. Visit the Chamber of Commerce’s website, the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau’s social media pages – find out what’s going on in the area.

Most of all don’t forget to take care of YOU! Pamper yourself in little ways throughout the moving process. Whatever helps you reduce stress: that favorite coffee, meditation, yoga, long walks, whatever helps you feel better don’t put off doing it.

Contemplating moving for retirement but haven’t decided on a location? Consider Hilton Head Lakes. There’s so much to explore and enjoy here. Why Chocolate for Valentine’s Day

Chocolate and Valentine’s Day just go together. Throw in a bouquet of flowers, a candlelight dinner and you have hit the Valentine’s jackpot. But did you ever wonder how chocolate came to be associated with Valentine’s Day?

As far back as the Aztecs chocolate was thought to be an aphrodisiac, and valuable enough that they used cacao beans as currency. There is some dispute as to when and how chocolate came to Europe but no dispute that it landed first in Spain. By the late 1500s chocolate was a much loved indulgence at court and by the 1840s Europe was enamored by the notion of Valentine’s Day as a holiday to celebrate romantic love. The Victorians fully embraced the holiday with elaborate cards and gifts. But where did chocolate come into play? Legend goes that we can thank Richard Cadbury.

Cadbury had recently improved his family’s chocolate making technique so as to extract pure cacao butter from whole beans, producing a more palatable drinking chocolate than most Britons had ever tasted. This process resulted in an excess amount of cocoa butter which Cadbury then used to produce many more varieties of what was then called ‘eating chocolate’. Cadbury recognized a great marketing opportunity for the new chocolates and started selling them in beautifully decorated boxes he himself designed. It is believed that he created the first heart shaped box for chocolate, a box so pretty that it could be used to hold mementos of a loved one.

So when you select that special heart shaped box of chocolates you are part of a tradition hundreds of years old. Why not start a new tradition and spend Valentine’s Day here at Hilton Head Lakes? Bring that box of chocolates, enjoy our wonderful weather, fabulous hospitality, and stroll with that special person along the beaches of the Lowcountry.

Spring Comes Early in the Lowcountry

It’s late January. Much of the country is coping with snow, ice, and bitter wind. Thoughts of farmer’s markets, long walks on the beach, the warmth of the sun, and the songs of birds are merely wishful thinking at this time of year. But they don’t have to be.

Here in the Lowcountry the average daytime temperature in late January is in the low 60s and nighttime seldom drops below 39 degrees. In fact, the farmers’ market in nearby Bluffton is open and you can golf on our championship course in January. January! Instead of skin chapped by icy winds, instead of shoveling snow, instead of settling for hothouse produce you could be warm and comfy here in Hilton Head Lakes.
