April Gardening in South Carolina

While homeowners in much of the country wait for that last threat of frost to pass by before planting their window boxes, often well into May, here at Hilton Head Lakes we’re already digging in the dirt and enjoying early blooms.

What are we planting while April snows still threaten the north? We’re planting our summer bulbs: delicious dahlias, glorious gladioli, colorful cannas and luscious lilies. We’re spraying our fruit trees to prepare for the bountiful harvests to come while up north blossoms are only just beginning to open. Planters are blooming on porches and patios. Spring is a magical time in the lowcountry. But what about vegetable gardening? Surely it’s too early for that, right? Not at all. April is the perfect time to set out cantaloupe, cucumbers, melons, squash, peas and beans, and even sweet corn. While northern climates are just beginning to consider cool weather crops, we’ve already moved on to summer crops.
