Moving? Some Things to Consider

It’s a whole new year! Will this year mean a new home for you and your family? If you’re planning, or even just toying with the idea of relocating here are a few things to consider.

Moving is a stressful process, whether you’ve been in your current location a short time or have twenty years or more invested in your home. Maybe you’re a minimalist, or maybe you believe in saving absolutely everything because you never know when you might need it. Either way, you’ve got to pack it all up. Yikes. Fortunately, there are experts out there with tips that can help.

The first tip is not to put off to tomorrow what you can accomplish today – call the utilities, hire a mover or set up the rental truck if you’re the do-it-yourself type, gather boxes, and eat up the perishables in your kitchen so that you don’t have to throw out any more than necessary.

Use the tried and true method of sorting your things: keep, donate and toss. Hold that garage sale, donated to local charities, if you need to rent a dumpster and pitch what you need to. After all, do you really need that broken whatsit? Are you really going to fix it ‘one of these days’?

Then there’s the packing. Yikes. There are a few hacks there too. First, don’t empty out the dresser drawers, keep everything in them but wrap them so things don’t fall out. Keep your clothes on their hangers, it will make it easier to unpack them later, use a wardrobe box if possible. Take a photo of the back of your TV so you can easily reconnect the cables to your various devices.

Get to know your new community. Visit the Chamber of Commerce’s website, the Convention and Visitors’ Bureau’s social media pages – find out what’s going on in the area.

Most of all don’t forget to take care of YOU! Pamper yourself in little ways throughout the moving process. Whatever helps you reduce stress: that favorite coffee, meditation, yoga, long walks, whatever helps you feel better don’t put off doing it.
